We may be slow learners, but once American travelers are on to something, watch out!
With checked baggage fees going as high as $50 a bag, vacation travelers are learning to pack light just like business travelers.
Here is what you need to know if you are going to avoid paying baggage fees: those weight and size limits imposed by each airlines are now enforced. In general (each airline makes its own rules) your luggage must weigh less than 50 pounds and be 45 inches (L+W+H) around or smaller. Getting to that is easy. If you don't need wheels, buy a duffle bag. If you need to "roll" buy an international sized carry-on bag. They are smaller and lighter. It is harder to get everything you need in the smaller bags, but with a round trip savings as high as $100 or more, you can buy items once you get to your destination and still save money.
