How to cash in on the latest airfare war

The low cost airlines started a fare war yesterday when JetBlue, Southwest and Virgin America all announced deep cuts. There are flights to southern California for $50 and flights to New York City for $150. Now American Airlines has jumped into the fray. An example of the sale is a flight from Oakland to Chicago for $204. You have to book right away and most travel has to be completed by the middle of June.

Travel websites that will save you big money

One of my favorite travel sites is autoslash.com. This site searches out coupons, codes and deals for car rentals and then shows you the best deal that moment. Nice, but then it gets better. Once you book your car, AutoSlash keeps looking and if it finds a better deal, it books a new reservation and cancels the old one.  Cayole.com helps you search for cruises by price, date, ship, and itinerary.  If you want to cut down on hotel costs and don’t mind if someone is spending the night in your house while you are spending the night in theirs, then check out homeexchange.com. It is a membership service where you deal directly with other members to swap houses for vacations or even extended stays.

Thank goodness for Consumer Reports Magazine. The folks there do a great job of finding the very best items so we don’t waste our money. Facebook to end daily deals

Facebook is putting a stop to its daily 'Deals’ offerings. The Groupon wannabe wasn’t shaping up like the online giant expected, so over the next few weeks it is winding down at least part of the program. Other online offers are still being made.

Great time for deals on cruises

In November cruise ships head out to more profitable waters.  They take long voyages to reposition ships for a season of winter cruising.

That means there are deals to be had. Cabins will go for half their lowest daily rate. There aren't many ports of calls -these ships are on the move- but the on board amenities are just as good. There are generally plenty of cabins available so the best deals come to those who wait.

Stock up on back-to-school supplies!

Back-to-School supplies are about to go on sale. With the last of our kids going back to school this week, school supplies will be deeply discounted this weekend... and what's left will be even cheaper next weekend. Stock up.

 

Sweet new credit card deal!

Capital One is introducing a new credit card today that pays a 1 1/2% kick back on all purchases. Most money-back cards only pay 1%. The catch? You only get 1% each month, but then get the rest at the anniversary date of activating the card. So if you get a $50 kickback at the end of August, another $25 dollars is added to the pile you receive in 12 months. Why do it this way? I assume to discourage you from cancelling the card.
