The brilliant researchers at dealnews have issued a study saying the worst time to get a discount on an Apple product is on the first day of release. Thanks Sherlock, we didn't really need your study to figure that out. However those dealnews detectives did find the retailers most likely to offer deals... and when. OK, now we are getting somewhere!

Make sure to get your free miles!
You have seen those Netflix deals where you get frequent flyer miles for signing up, right? Well the idea of FF mile sign up bonuses is really catching on. Open a savings account with Fidelity, a brokerage account with TD Ameritrade or take out a mortgage with Chase and they'll dump a boat load of miles in your account. Even Nutrisystem is offing a signing bonus. So don't go out and get a new loan just to get miles, but if you are getting a mortgage anyways - or signing up for any new service - ask about miles.

Live Nation and Groupon are teaming up
Concert giant, Live Nation and coupon giant, Groupon, have cut a deal. Soon members of Groupon will start receiving emails offering them 50% off of concert tickets. Another reason to sign up for Groupon and another reason to balk at paying a hundred bucks to see a live show!

Free phone calls and texting to Japan
Most of the major carriers are offering free phone calls and texting to Japan. It started with free calls offered by AT&T, now the others are joining in. Each has its own rules, so check with your own carrier.

Win free breakfast once a week for a year!
Einstein Bros. Bagels is opening up a restaurant at California State University East Bay. To get out the word, Einstein is giving away free breakfast for a year to a select group. Here’s what a company’s press release says, “Einstein Bros. Bagels will present the first 50 people in line with coupons valid for one free Breakfast Sandwich a week for one year. The restaurant will open on Monday, March 7, 2011 at 9 a.m.” The restaurant is located next to the North Science Building across from the Administration Building.

Should you pull money out of your 401k?
If you owe a bunch of money to credit card companies and need relief, you may be eyeing your 401k. Bad idea; you’ll pay income tax on the withdrawal, which could put you in a higher tax bracket. You’ll also have to pay a 10% penalty and you must stop making contributions to the account for six months, which means you won’t get your companies matching money. Are phone upgrade discounts ending?
One of the cool things about cell phones is getting a new one every two years real cheap. Now that is changing. Verizon is reportedly going to stop handing out the free phone money every two years: iPhone mania means the company no longer has to work as hard to hang on to customers... so free phones and cheap upgrades will be harder to come by. It isn't just Verizon other companies are expected to follow along, so read those contracts boys and girls... the mobile world is changing.
