Vic Gundotra, senior VP of engineering, is kicking off the keynote. The event is being streamed to 122 cities around the world, including Cairo and Beijing, to an estimated 10,000 people.
Hugo Barra, product manager for Android, is on stage now, announcing that Google has achieved 100 million Android activations as of today. 310 devices now in 112 countries. "Talk about choice," Barra crows. 400,000 activations each and every day. 200,000 applications available now for Android.
It's not expected that Sergey Brin, Larry Page or Eric Schmidt will be taking to the stage for this keynote. Gundotra and Barra, so far, are smooth and articulate communicators.
Google is releasing Android Honeycomb (version 3.1) today to mobile devices, initially to Verizon. This is the operating system that Google earlier released for tablets. The Motorola Xoom was the first to launch with Honeycomb.
